Larch (pictured) is among the dominant plants in boreal forests of Russia and Canada. The needles turn yellow and fall in the late autumn, leaving the trees leafless through the winter.

Modrzew to jedno z głównych drzew rosyjskich i kanadyjskich lasów iglastych. W przeciwieństwie do innych drzew iglastych, których igły zostają na zimę, modrzew każdej jesieni zrzuca igły - żółkną one i opadają, pozostawiając na zimę pozbawione igieł gałęzie.

Alle Lärchen-Arten sind sommergrüne Bäume, werfen also im Spätherbst ihre nadelförmigen Blätter ab. Damit sind sie eine der zwei nicht immergrünen Gattungen innerhalb der Kieferngewächse. Die andere Gattung ist die der Goldlärchen, welche nicht zu den Lärchen gehört.
