The great egret is a large, widely distributed egret, with four subspecies found in Asia, Africa, the Americas, and southern Europe. Distributed across most of the tropical and warmer temperate regions of the world. It builds tree nests in colonies close to water.

Silberreiher leben in monogamer Saisonehe und werden im zweiten Lebensjahr geschlechtsreif. Die Jungvögel schlüpfen nach 25–26 Tagen und sind mit 40–50 Tagen flügge. Die Kolonie wird meist 10 Tage nach Schlüpfen verlassen. 75 % der Jungvögel überleben das erste Lebensjahr nicht.
