Samba is a lively, rhythmical dance of Afro-Brazilian origin, For years, it became the major type of dance in the North east of Brazil during the holiday months. The dance is completely choreographed and the movements tend to mimic the lyrics.

Zur Begleitung benutzte man dabei nicht nur Trommeln, sondern zur rhythmischen Unterstützung auch Händeklatschen oder das Schlagen von Besteck, Gläsern und Tellern. Seit den Jahren um 1920 ist Samba der Haupttanz des Karnevals in Rio.
