The dodo is an extinct flightless bird that was endemic to the island of Mauritius, east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. The dodo's closest genetic relative was the also extinct Rodrigues solitaire, the two forming the subfamily Raphinae of the family of pigeons and doves. The closest living relative of the dodo is the Nicobar pigeon.

Dodo to wymarły gatunek dużego ptaka z rodziny gołębiowatych. Najprawdopodobniej ostatniego przedstawiciela tego gatunku zabito w 1662 roku kilkadziesiąt lat po odkryciu wyspy przez Europejczyków.

Der nächste lebende Verwandte des Dodos ist die Kragentaube. Sie ist ebenfalls flugunfähig, sieht aber sonst komplett anders aus. Sie lebt auf verschiedenen Inseln im Indischen Ozean, von den Nikobaren, über die Philippinen bis hin nach Neuguinea.
