Konkurencje szermiercze różnią się ważnym polem trafienia: w szpadzie jest to całe ciało, w szabli górna połowa ciała, we florecie tylko tułów. We florecie i szabli istnieje szereg zasad umownych (zawodnik wykonujący natarcie ma pierwszeństwo w zadaniu trafienia itp).
