In Zoroastrianism, water (apo, aban) and fire (atar, azar) are agents of ritual purity, and the associated purification ceremonies are considered the basis of ritual life. Both water and fire are considered life-sustaining, and are represented within the precinct of a fire temple.

Kult świętego ognia jest podstawą zaratusztrianizmu. Ogień jest oczyszczającą siłą i jest utożsamiany z prawdą i porządkiem. Podbój Persji przez muzułmanów spowodował zniszczenie lub przekształcenie w meczety większości świątyń. W XX w. wiele zniszczonych świątyń ognia zostało zrekonstruowanych. Najstarsza zachowana zadaszona świątynia ognia znajduje się w Iranie, koło Kuh-e Khwaja i pochodzi z czasów Seleukidów.

Der Zororastrismus erlebte seine große Blütezeit zwischen dem 2. und dem 7. Jahrhundert n. Chr. und wurde erst mit der zunehmenden Verbreitung des Islam verboten und verdrängt. Für den Zororastrismus sind die heiligen Feuertempel von zentraler Bedeutung, einige noch erhaltene Feuertempel werden bis heute genutzt. Feuer soll eine reinigende Kraft innewohnen, außerdem wird das Feuer mit Recht, Ordnung und der Wahrheit gleichgestellt.
