In the 19th century, there were no clear borders defined between Peru, Bolivia and Chile in the area of the Atacama desert. This became a problem with the discovery of valuable sodium nitrate deposits in the area.

Pumapunku is part of a large temple complex or monument group that is part of the Tiwanaku Site near Tiwanaku, in western Bolivia. It is believed to date to AD 536 and later. Tiwanaku is significant in Inca traditions because it is believed to be the site where the world was created.

Quechua is spoken in the Andes by some 8 to 10 million speakers. Today, Quechua has the status of an official language in Bolivia and Peru, along with Spanish.
